Gary’s favourite screenwriter(s) is the Coen brothers. â€ÂÂœTheir dialogues are like music to my ears†says Gary. He admires their ability to create unique and compelling characters. The subtext created in the subtext of their themes is where Gary draws inspiration from. He uses some of their universal themes in his writing when creating exposition, metaphors and emotional masks.
Gary’s process for writing is a mix of ethnographic observation and his own life experiences. His key messages in his screenplays focus on how individuals face the many challenges of life and how the emotional journey that life takes people through changes who they are.
His characters face interpersonal conï¬Â‚icts and inner battles that builds tension through the storyline. Through this experience characters learn and as a result grow to become stronger individuals and recognize this change in themselves towards the ï¬ÂÂnal scenes. Gary spends a good portion of his time studying the masters of the art of cinema and screenwriting as a way to engage his creativity and learn new techniques. He also reads many screenplays and books on philosophy. He can be typically found in a co ï¬Â€ ee shop soaking in the activity and dynamic atmosphere, which he ï¬ÂÂnds is a great way to get creative juices going. Gary has a very busy schedule as he writes on his spare time when he is not working at IBM during the day. He would love to write full time as a professional career and looks forward to pursuing further travel interest as well.
